Tuina (pronounced Twee-na)

< Back to Natural Therapies

Head, neck & shoulders

This therapy works with the meridian system.  Tuina is primarily a massage therapy where we press, tap, knead and use various other manipulations and techniques to help remove blockages along the meridian lines of the body.

This helps to promote the flow of Chi energy and blood to promote healing.  Not only relaxes the mind and body but also helps to realign the physical body.

What to Expect……

Never go for a treatment directly after eating, always wait at least an hour.

When a client comes for a session of Head, Neck & Shoulder Tuina, they will be asked to sit on a stool.  The clothes remain on.

After answering some brief questions about the nature and location of their complaint (if there is one!) as well as a few basic questions about their general health the practitioner will begin to work on certain acupressure points, energy trigger points and muscles and joints which surround the affected area around the head, neck and shoulders.

Don’t expect a light, relaxing massage, this therapeutic method goes straight after the problem, and sometimes requires significant pressure or manipulation.  Where there is excessive rubbing or friction involved the practitioner will either cover the area with a thin cotton cloth or use a little oil to cut down on the friction to the skin.

Treatment sessions can last anything from half an hour to an hour.

As with most ‘energy-based’ treatments, patients usually feel either relaxed and tired or uplifted and energised by the treatment.  More importantly they more often than not experience a great release of pain and discomfort.

Tuina is now recognised as a form of medical treatment throughout China as well as some Western countries.  It is becoming more and more widespread every day.  In China every hospital has a Tuina department.
